Make Space takes a breather

Make Space is currently taking a break for the Autumn. We are hoping to gather a few creative circles together, to have a go at some "Coffee, Cake and Make" sessions, possibly crochet or sewing. We'll let you know as they grow!

We also loved doing the Summer workshops for young people so much this year, it is something we plan to do again next year, so watch this space for further details.

In the meantime, if anyone out there has a creative something they want to shout about - this is the place to do it, so let us know. It can be anything creative you are involved in in this community, including dance, drama, art and music.

Cut and Paste Heaven

We've just returned home after this mornings brilliant collage workshop with 14 Junior Make Spacers. We had a fab time, surrounded by all sorts of lovely materials, buttons, beads, beach finds, papers and paints.

It was great to be up in the Herbie room again, especially on such a lovely sunny day. It really feels like you are sitting amidst the tops of the trees up there - beautiful and so inspiring!

All of the participants went home with one or two - and sometimes three or four collages, ready to hang on their walls. they were all so different too - from intricate drawings, to explosions of colour and 3-D materials.

Half way through the morning we stopped to look at each others' work and enjoy a drink and a cupcake - quickly becoming the "Make Space for a Cupcake" moment of each workshop!

I particularly enjoyed the queue of things to be stuck using the glue gun - (a job just for the adult helper) even though I managed to burn myself more than once in the process! They were all so inventive.

We hope you all enjoyed yourselves as much as we did and have a happy memory of your morning spent creating when you look at the collage on your wall. thanks for being with us and don't forget to keep an eye out on this blog for details of our next events.

If you have any ideas about workshops you would like, why don't you comment below? We'd love to hear from you. That goes for you grown ups out there too - we have lots of ideas, but we'd like to hear your too!

Don't forget to check out the Gallery page to see the lovely art work we've been creating!

Drawing Inspiration

Our second workshop was well attended today and everyone there really threw themselves into the drawing activity.
We began by choosing still life objects from our vast collection of bits and pieces and then took them back to a comfortable place either at a table or with a drawing board.

The idea was to try a drawing media you hadn't used before, including charcoal, graphite pencils and the hugely popular ink and stick!

There were some really lovely drawings and a few participants were enthusiastically turning out piece after piece of fabulous work. I especially liked the use of paper collage with ink and water drawings over the top.

There was a lovely atmosphere today; a mix of tranquility, concentration and fun. Hopefully all of those who came enjoyed it as much as we did and went home having learned something new - or at least having tried a new technique or way of working - even if it meant stepping out of the comfort zone for a minute!

I have learned over my artistic career that experimentation only helps develop your style, so never be afraid to try something different to the way you usually work. (Tip for the day!)

For those who didn't quite finish their drawings, there are photos of your still life here. Have fun finishing them off!

It's been lovely these last couple of days and we are so looking forward to next Friday morning's collage workshop. Please let us know if you intend to come so that we can make space available, it is proving quite popular already!

Look what we made!

Today was our very first Make Space workshop and it was a brilliant one to kick us off! The Herbert Shiner Centre upper room was the perfect setting for our Youth Art Collage workshop, with it's lovely light and views and as much space as we could Make Space in!

Jo and I had so much fun preparing for this workshop; gathering materials and sorting them - we were totally in our element and hopefully so were all the participants. Judging by the beautiful results - they too had a lovely time.

It always amazes me how differently everyone approaches the same blank piece of canvas and with such varied results! I was truly impressed by the level of artistry on show today and would happily have hung any one of the collages on my wall at home.

We aimed to provide a space in which people could be free to follow whatever direction they wanted to, with as much or as little guidance from us as they wanted, but always LOTS of encouragement! What I love about doing something like this is that I come home more inspired than when the day began, thanks to the enthusiasm and creativity of everyone taking part. i went home itching to get my art materials out too!

Cupcakes and biscuits always help to keep you going and there were plenty on hand!

At the end of the morning, participants were invited to fill a paper bag with any materials they wanted to take home and grab a specially prepared goody bag of lovely collage bits and pieces to keep them going over the summer.

We hope all of you who came today enjoyed yourselves as much as we did, and we'll see some of you tomorrow at the drawing workshop. XX

Welcome!

Welcome to our new Make Space blog! Here you will find all you need to know about what's going on and how to get involved as well as tutorials, guest appearances by crafty people and links to other interesting sites.

This is a space we hope will grow as time goes on and more of you lovely makerly people get involved. If you have an article you've written to publish here, some photos of something you've been working on, or an event you'd like everyone to know about in the crafting world - let us know.

In the mean time, how about a little creative fun for the teenager (School years 6 - 13) in your life in the shape of two holiday workshops?! The first on July 27th is a collage workshop, and oh, my goodness have we got some lovely things for them to play with! The aim is for them to go home with an A3 canvas, ready (or at least nearly ready) to hang on their bedroom wall. We'll provide all the materials, including canvas and a yummy cupcake or two (because young people are ALWAYS hungry!), just come along ( with £5) to the Herbert Shiner Centre in Petworth for a 10 o'clock start, finishing at 12. They will even go home with a crafty goody bag - what more could they want?!

The second workshop is for those who love to draw. Same time, place and cost, but the next day, on July 28th. We'll e setting up all sorts of challenges and lovely things to draw and experimenting with different drawing implements from charcoal to pen and ink and pastels.

Both these workshops are led by Naomi, who is Fine Art and Teacher Trained and Jo, who is generally brilliant at all things crafty. Not only will you have the chance to create something really lovely, but you'll also get to hang out with friends and eat cake!

If you would like to pre-book, you can email me on redeemcreations.co.uk or phone me on 07904492609. If you need any more information, just get in touch.
